1. a) to copy in writing or in typewriting: »

to transcribe an ancient manuscript.

b) to write out, as in ordinary letters, words, or characters: »

The account of the trial was transcribed from the stenographer's shorthand notes.

2. to set down in writing or print: »

His speech was transcribed in the newspapers, word for word.

3. Music. to arrange (a composition) for a different voice or instrument.
4. to make a recording or phonograph record of (as a program or music) for playing back or broadcasting.
5. Phonetics. to record (speech) in a system of phonetic symbols; represent (a speech sound) by a phonetic symbol.
6. Genetics. to form or synthesize (a nucleic acid molecule or molecules) by transferring genetic information from a template: »

to transcribe DNA into messenger RNA.
